Twenty Thousand Dollars in Scholarships Awarded on May 21, 2014 at our First Awards Event

Hope High Dollars for Scholars®, held its First Annual Awards Dinner at Blaze East Side Restaurant, Providence, RI. It was a wonderful and heartwarming event for all.

The evening was so very special. From the warm intimate atmosphere and the delicious Blaze restaurant food, all the heartfelt words of encouragement for our scholarship winners, to the excitement and joy of the scholarship presentations, to our raucous nightcap raffles - a good time was had by all.

Eight Hope seniors received scholarships totaling $20,000. In addition to the six Hope High Dollars for Scholars® $1000 awards, two of the awards were renewable four-year scholarships, the $10,000 Louis B Mendelsohn Entrepreneurial Award and the $4,000 Hope Class of 1962 Award.  As you can see, they are all very happy to be one of our 2014 recipients!

Second Annual Louis B. Mendelsohn Award

Lou Mendelsohn traveled from his home in Florida to present the second Louis B Mendelsohn Entrepreneur Award to Jean Rodriguez-Hernandez.  "I can't thank you enough, Mr. Mendelsohn for this opportunity you have given me to go to college. I'm so appreciative and will definitely give back to my community in the future and make good use of this award! " Jean will be attending Rhode Island College, majoring in Business.  For Lou, President and Chief Executive Officer of Market Technologies, LLC, this award demonstrates his strong connection to Hope High. "I fondly remember my high school experiences at Hope, and I am honored to be able to fund the Hope High Dollars for Scholars® first named Legacy Scholarship award.  Hopefully, this will encourage other Hope alumni, as well as local community leaders in Providence, to join together to assure that the Hope High Dollars for Scholars® program becomes an enduring source of financial support and encouragement to future generations of graduates, who aspire to live the American dream as I have done."

Class of 1962 Reunion Scholarship

The "Class of 1962" through its reunion fundraising efforts was proud to present the very first Hope High class gift "named" scholarship to Joselyn Giron Noriega who will be attending Boston College, School of Nursing. "I really appreciate this class scholarship. It will help me so much with my tuition and expenses. I am really grateful to the Class of 1962 for awarding me this scholarship."  Jerry Chorney, Hope '62, stated that his class could not imagine a more fulfilling way to give back to its high school than to offer this special scholarship opportunity.  "We are excited to be part of Hope High Dollars for Scholars® and encourage other Hope classes to help provide scholarships for deserving Hope seniors."

Our Awards dinner was made possible by the enormous generosity of two very special people -- Phyllis Arffa and Christine Edmonds, owners of the wonderful Blaze Restaurant on Hope Street.  Thank you for making this a fantastic celebration for our students and families.

Six Hope High Dollars for Scholars® $1000 Scholarships

Ann Salk Rosenberg '60 and Chair of our Awards Committee presented each recipient with our scholarship plaque she designed and created as a memento of the occasion and the honor of the award.

Our six $1000 scholarships went to Jerry Bonne-Annee (URI Engineering), Pierre Charles, (URI), Achut Thapa (Guilford College, Engineering/Business), Jessica Zapata (Providence College, Psychology), Mariam Livingstone (Johnson & Wales, Culinary) and Ja-nea Stevens (URI, Business).

We were delighted that in addition to all our very special recipients and guests, our evening program included speakers Michael Solomon, President, Providence City Council, representing the Office of the Mayor of Providence, Joseph DiPina, Chief of Administration, Providence School Board, Tamara Sterling, Hope High Principal, Lynne Zervas, Area Director Scholarship America® and Jane Rosenbloom Bermont, our chapter president.

Each speaker reinforced the importance of scholarships like ours that help deserving students make their dreams of attending post graduate studies a reality. A resounding message from all the speakers was, " Your hard work and determination will continue to carry you through your college years.. You've earned the right to be there and you belong there!"

This first dinner event was made possible with the enormous generosity of two very special people. A very big thank you to Phyllis Arffa and Christine Edmonds, owners of Blaze, who generously donated the food and services of their wonderful Hope Street restaurant, for all their support making this a truly celebratory event and milestone for our chapter and the community.

About Hope High Dollars for Scholars®: The Hope High Dollars for Scholars Chapter, a non-profit, tax exempt affiliate of Scholarship America, was founded by Hope alumna, Jane Rosenbloom Bermont, in 2011. The all-volunteer Board of Directors as well as most donors are also Hope alumni. And, because of donor generosity, the chapter was able to award six scholarships in May 2012 and seven scholarships in May 2013.

Thank you to all our generous donors for making the awards possible and for all those who contributed to this year's event! We hope we will be able to award even more scholarships next year and in the coming years with your help.
