Hope High Dollars for Scholars®

2015 - 2016

Annual Appeal

It's that time again!  We hope you will join the many Hope alumni and friends who are making it possible to change a Hope senior's life.

Five years ago, Hope High Dollars for Scholars was a brand new Scholarship America chapter with big dreams - to provide support for deserving and financially challenged Hope seniors who also have big dreams, to graduate from college and to share in the American Dream.  And, to date, thanks to our generous alumni donors, thirty Hope seniors have received $66,000 in scholarships.

Now we have even bigger dreams for Hope seniors!  We want to help ensure our recipients complete college by increasing the number of four-year renewable scholarships.  Scholarship America recognizes the importance of renewable scholarships and, to this end, has provided Hope High Dollars for Scholars (HHDfS) with a wonderful challenge -- a $10,000 Matching Grant for Renewable Scholarships.   This means all 2015-2016 donations will be matched up to $10,000.

In 2015, thanks to our magnificent donors and sponsors, HHDfS offered three Renewable Scholarships.  Shiva Karki, Hope '15 and a renewable scholarship winner, shares his story:

"I was born in a Bhutanese refugee camp.  By the time I was a teenager, my mother had left and my father had died.  My brother and I attended school when we could, but spent most of our days trying to survive."  Then a miracle happened. Under the auspices of the United Nations, Shiva and his brother came to Providence, RI.  Shiva's brother found a job and Shiva found Hope High School.  Barriers like language, culture and poverty did not prevent Shiva from achieving his goal - to graduate in the top of his class.  And a Hope Dollars for Scholars four-year renewable scholarship made college a reality for Shiva.  "I am humbled and so grateful to Hope Dollars for Scholars for believing in me. I am so proud."

What are the  Ingredients for a Perfect Summer Afternoon?

Glorious summer weather, Hope friends, lunch on the waterfront at the Whiskey Republic, and an educational boat ride along Providence's historical riverfront. Jerry Chorney, an HHDfS board member, organized this June fundraiser which raised $700 for our chapter.  And, because we have a matching grant from Scholarship America, HHDfS now has $1400 towards future scholarships! Thanks, Jerry!
