Congratulations to our 2021 Scholars!

Everett Maxwell Memorial Scholarship

I, along with the Maxwell family and friends and members of Hope '53, am excited and honored to fund this award in memory of Everett Maxell. Everett was our class president and my football teammate. His Hope High years set the stage for his leadership and integrity in his adult life as a businessman and as a Lt. Colonel in the RI & NY Air National Guard.  Everett was a special and impressive guy. On behalf of Edward's family and classmates, I wish Elaine all the best at RIC.

Margaret Drowne Henry Memorial Scholarship

Our sister Margaret (Peggy) Drowne Henry was a 1962 Hope grad. Her sister Carol graduated Hope the following year. Her sister Helen also attended Hope.  Sadly, Peg recently passed away from COVID 19. She was a nurse with an RN degree from Roger Williams Hospital School of Nursing. A scholarship in her memory to support a college-bound Hope senior seemed a most appropriate way to honor her legacy of caring for others. On behalf of all who made this award possible, we wish Ruben success at URI.

Patricia Houlihan Memorial Scholarship

The Patricia Houlihan Memorial Scholarship honors the life and career of Patricia Houlihan, Hope '57. Pat was the first in her family to attend college and was a devoted Providence teacher and guidance counselor for 30 years. Some other accomplishments included serving as President of the Rhode Island Federation of Teachers and Health Professionals, Vice President of the Providence Teachers Union, and Secretary of the Providence Central Labor Council. She was also a charter member of the Coalition of Labor Union Women. Her passion for children, teaching, and labor have made HHDfS a wonderful way to remember her. Our best to you, Xaviel!

Markoff Sisters Scholarship

The Markoff Sisters Scholarship supports a graduating Hope High senior who dreams of continuing their education. The Markoffs were three sisters who attended Hope High School and graduated in the 1930's-1940's. Many of their children also attended Hope High in the 1960's-1970's. With fond memories and gratitude, our alumni family members wanted to offer the opportunity of college to others. With all of Ambar's academic and athletic accomplishments in high school and her future potential in higher education, she sounds like a terrific fit for our scholarship. In my own mother's words, "Be grateful for all your blessings, and use them to enrich another person's life." So, in the spirit of my mother and all the Markoff Family Members, we congratulate Ambar and wish her great success!

Gurdjian Sisters Scholarship

We were born and raised in Providence and believe we received an excellent education attending Providence public schools -John Howland School, Nathan Bishop Middle School and Hope. Our public school education gave us a terrific foundation when we pursued higher education.  We are fortunate to have had successful careers and find ourselves in a position to help Hope High seniors who  are applying to colleges and universities with the same dreams we had over five decades ago.  Thus, we decided to establish the Gurdjian Sisters Scholarship with the intent to fund it annually.  We believe as Benjamin Franklin said:
"An investment in knowledge pays the best interest."   We are honored to make Yoceline Portella's dreams come true.

Opportunity Scholarship

The Opportunity Scholarship was created to provide a chance for a Hope senior to attend college without having to graduate with an undue amount of debt. We believe that higher education provides added skills, training, and discipline and opens paths for a rewarding career. We hope Aisha will enjoy her college experience.  Lucy and Peter Ascoli

Tommy Feldman Memorial Scholarship

Tommy Feldman was our best friend. We grew up together, we went through our adolescence together, we held each other's secrets. At the end of his freshman year in college, Tommy was killed in a tragic accident.  We never truly healed from the devastating loss. Honoring Tommy's memory with this scholarship gives Hope graduates a better chance and helps us heal. We are so appreciative for the support and generosity of our Hope '66 classmates and many others - thank you all!  Congratulations, Graciela. Good Luck at RIC!
